Feature & Follow Friday #26

Q: Summer Reading - What was your favorite book that you were REQUIRED to read when you were in school?

A: I think The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was my favorite required reading and I have read it again since. I remember enjoying To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee but I really need to re-read it for the details. I will be adding this to my list. Oh and Life of Pi by Yann Martel was good too. I have that on my nook to re-read also.

What was your favorite required reading? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: Christmas in July!!! Someone give you a gift card for two books (whatever that costs). What two books will you buy?

A: This is like the hardest question ever for me! I never know which book I will buy next. It depends what I feel like reading or if the next book in a series is available. I also impulsively buy books when I see deals on them, like from the Nook Lovers Daily Cheap Read. If I had to pick two I would try to pre-order Tiger's Destiny (Tiger Curse Series #4) by Colleen Houck and also pre-order The Rainbow Maker's Tale by Melanie Cousick-Jones (second book in the Ambrosia Sequence). Those are 2 books I am anxiously awaiting to come out. I'm not even sure if you can pre-order them yet but I will pretend you can.

What 2 books would you want? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: What drove you to start blogging in the first place?

A: I needed an outlet for all my bookish thoughts. For awhile I tried getting my mom to read all the books I read so we could talk about them, but she wasn't keeping up haha. I had too many book thoughts and no where to share. I had no idea there was even a book blogging community when I started. Now Reading Kelly is like a diary of my books with the occasional travel post thrown in and I love it.

Why did you start blogging? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: Jumping Genres - Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

A: I have been doing this more and more as I try to branch out with my reading. I used to only read historical fiction and sometimes contemporary. Then I picked up The Hunger Games series and fell in love. I had no idea what to expect from The Hunger Games except that someone told me they were really good books. Now I see myself going for more dystopian and paranormal books. I am also now reading the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy which is something I would not normally go for. I'm not really into romance novels. I am enjoying Fifty Shades and could possibly see myself reading a romance every now and then.

What genre did you unexpectedly fall in love with? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: Birthday Wishes - Blow out the candles and imagine what character would pop out of your cake...who is it and what book are they from?

A: I'm thinking a little eye candy would be good...like Landon/Lucas from Easy by Tammara Webber or Ren & Kishan from the Tiger Curse series by Colleen Houck.

Who do you want to pop out of your birthday cake? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: If you could unread a book, which one would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad?

A: Hmm I don't think I've read a book that was so terrible I want to unread it. But I wouldn't mind unreading Easy to read for the first time again. I just finished Easy by Tammara Webber (see my review HERE) and it has just stuck with me ever since I finished it. I almost just want to start it over again. I'm sure there are others I could unread to experience for the first time again but I can always just re-read them too :)

What book would you unread? Leave a comment to let me know!

I've missed a couple weeks of F&F Friday since I have just been crazy busy but I'm back this week! Here is today's question...

Q: Happy Father's Day! Who is your favorite dad character in a book and why?

A: I think I'm going to have to say Jack McCall from Beach Music (see my review here.) Jack drove me nuts sometimes when it came to dealing with his parents and siblings, but he was a wonderful father. Jack treated his daughter Leah, like she was an adult even though she was only 8. He respected her, was honest and talked to her about things they were going through. My own dad is similar, but not always as open as Jack McCall is.

Who is your favorite dad character? Is he like your own dad? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: You are a matchmaker- your goal, hook up two characters from your favorite books. Who would it be? How do you think it would go?

A: I am going to try to make sparks fly with Diane Bishop from A Discovery of Witches and Marco from The Night Circus. A witch who denies her magic and a magician who uses his surroundings to create magic. Could be an interesting couple. They could either get along very well or literally make sparks fly (not in a good way). I would have fingers crossed that they would work out and create some amazing magic together.

Q: Summer Break is upon us! What would be the perfect vacation spot for you to catch up on your reading & relax?

A: My first choice is always Hawaii (it will be my first choice until I move there). Probably Maui because it is a great mix of relaxing and a little night life.

This was actually in Kauai but it was the perfect beach day of reading, kite flying, napping, and just hanging out.

I also want to go back to the Bahamas. I was recently there for work and actually got to participate in some of my group's activities (which never happens!) but I want to go back to do more like the Underwater Scooters and Powerboats to Exuma Island and of course more of this...

Where would you go on vacation to read and relax? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: This Sunday in the U.S. is Mother's Day, in celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships?

A: I definitely have to say The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. This was a great book about the life of a woman and growing up. Told from the daughter, Dinah's point of view, she tells the story of her mother and aunts, herself growing up, and her life as an adult. I have recommended this book to my mom, aunts, grandma and many other ladies.

What books have you read with strong mother/child bonds? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author?

A: Hmm this is a tough one for me because I am not sure who my favorite author is (this is sad, I know). My favorite book is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern so I would probably gush to her how amazing I think her book is. And ask her to tell me there really is a Night Circus because I want to experience it in real life.

Who is your favorite author? What would you tell them? Leave me a comment and let me know :)

Q: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?

A: This was a tough question for me. I don't read many books with heroes/villains. I tend to read more historical fiction (I clearly need to change this and start including more heroes in my reading). However, after looking through my reading list and thinking about characters this is what I came up with...
Lokesh from The Tiger's Curse Series and Voldemort from HP. Both are hungry for power and out to get the ones holding them back from becoming the most powerful. I am leaning towards Lokesh winning. He just seems pure evil with the way he likes to torture people.

Q: What is one book you would be nervous to see a movie adaptation of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

A: The book/movie One Day was a perfect example of this- I had to watch the movie because I was interested in how they would show the different years. Each chapter of the book takes place on the same day, but in a different year. And sometimes the years skip a few. I was not very impressed with the movie. They handled the timing well but the emotions from the book just weren't there.
A book that has not been made into a movie yet that I'm a bit worried about it of course my favorite, The Night Circus. I'm excited to see this one come to life but worried it won't be as amazing as the book. My fingers are crossed with this one.

What book to movie would you be worried about?

Q: Have you ever bought a book BECAUSE of a bad review?

A: I don't think I have ever really chosen a book because of a bad review. I've read some books that had more negative reviews from some readers but I always keep in mind not everyone will like every book they read. And it is always a possibility I will enjoy something more than others- it's all about personal preferences.

What about you...any book you just had to read because of a bad review? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Q: Do you read one book at a time or do you switch back and forth between two or more?

I only read one book at a time. I like to be fully absorbed into that book and I feel like if I were reading more than one at a time I wouldn't be as into the stories. I have to admit I've never tried reading more than one book at a time. I'm just not very keen on the thought of it.

What about you, one book or multiple at a time??

Q: What is the longest book you've read? What are your favorite 600+ page reads?

I think the longest book I read was Shantaram at 933 pages.  Discovery of Witches is one of my favorite longer reads at 585 pages (nook edition). I don't think I have many other books over 600 pages that I would consider a favorite.

Q: What is the best book you've read in the past month? What is the worst book you've read in the last month?

A: Unfortunately due to my busy schedule I have not read many books in the past month. In fact I've only read 2 :( They were both good so I don't think I want to pick a worst, but I will say I enjoyed Bright Young Things just a tiny bit more than it's sequel Beautiful Days.
What about you? What are your best and worst books this past month?

Q: Have you ever looked at a book's cover and thought "This is going to be horrible"? But, instead was pleasantly surprised? Show us the cover and tell us about the book.

A: I am one of those people that tend to pick out books by the cover. If I am browsing in a book store, I go for what catches my eye first. Because of this, I don't know that I have thought about a book being horrible based on the cover. Sometimes the opposite happens; the cover looks great and the book is not so good. Anyways there is one book I can think of that the cover threw me off a bit, The Book Thief.

This cover does not depict a book about a young girl in Nazi Germany who steals books and learns to read. I kept thinking it was going to be more of a mystery or something. I am not even really sure what the dominoes have to do with the story as a whole. However, I very much enjoyed this book despite the fact that the cover threw me for a loop.

Q: What book would you love to see made into a movie or television show and do you have actors/actresses in mind to play the main characters?

A: Books to movies are never as good as just reading the book. So to put a book I really like into a movie could really disappoint me. However, because of all the imagery and magic in The Night Circus, I would like to see that book made into a movie. I know this could ruin the imagery created in my mind from reading this book, but I think it would be great to see this black and white circus come to life. I'm not very good with actors/actresses so I'm going to leave that part be and think on it for awhile. If I come up with anything I will leave the answer in my comments. (And I am pretty sure The Night Circus is being made into a movie and I plan to see it as soon as it come out!)

Q: Activity!!! Take a picture or describe where you love to read the most…

The BEACH!!!! I love reading at the beach. This picture is from Kauai, but any beach will do. I love being in the sun with my toes in the sand and a book in my hand!
