Feature & Follow Friday #22

Q: Birthday Wishes - Blow out the candles and imagine what character would pop out of your cake...who is it and what book are they from?

A: I'm thinking a little eye candy would be good...like Landon/Lucas from Easy by Tammara Webber or Ren & Kishan from the Tiger Curse series by Colleen Houck.

Who do you want to pop out of your birthday cake? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Picture Post! (June 27)

This week's job in the Big Island of Hawaii has been amazing! I feel so at home here in the islands. I always said I would move here and now I am starting to put a plan together to make it happen in the next year or two (hopefully). This program has been pretty laid back with evenings free to enjoy ourselves. I spent the first few nights with my coworkers out on the 18th fairway of the golf course drinking beers and star gazing- you can see so many stars here. Amazing! I haven't had much time for the beach, but just being able to take in the scenery and be near the ocean is wonderful. Here are a couple pics I've taken so far...

The island looks like a black desert of lava rock

First sunset here 6/21/2012

I am not a fan of lizards but this one was pretty

Liebster Blog Award

I've been tagged with the Liebster Blog Award, twice, thanks to Helene at Helene's World of Books and Sophie at Dog Eared and Coffee Stained. The Liebster Award if for bloggers with less than 200 followers. Award winners share 11 facts about themselves, answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who tagged them, come up with 11 of their own questions and tag 11 more bloggers with the award (that is a lot of 11's!)  So here we go...

11 Facts about me
1. When I grow up I want to be a photographer, chef, librarian, florist, dolphin trainer, food critic, travel agent, wedding planner, independent book store owner and more
2. I prefer to read on my Nook or tablet, but an occasional hard or paperback is nice
3. I love the feeling of finishing an amazing book and thinking you will never find another one as good...until you find the next one
4. My favorite place in the world is Hawaii and I am trying to move there
5. I have 4 tattoos (1 is a very large one on my back) and I want more but don't know if I will ever get them
6. I don't like to reread books. I'm afraid I won't like them as much as the first time
7. Being outside makes me happy. Reading outside makes me happier
8. I would like to visit every country in the world. I realize this is a hefty goal but I think it can be done
9. I am adventurous when it comes to eating- I love trying new foods and recipes
10. Reading has always been a love of mine but I have really gotten back into it the past couple years
11. I want to learn to drive a motorcycle- this will happen one day

Questions from Helene
1. How important is the cover for you?
Covers are not the most important thing to me when it comes to choosing a book. I appreciate covers, especially very pretty ones, but I do not always make my book choices based on them.
2. Where do you read your books?
Everywhere! I travel for a living so I am always reading somewhere new. My favorite place is to be on the beach or outside with nice scenery. Most evenings I read in bed before going to sleep. Or in a restaurant if I go to dinner alone. I will read anywhere I can!
3. When you're reading a book you are going to review, do you take notes or do you write it all down at once after you finish the book?
I have never reviewed a book for someone else. I only review for myself to keep track of my thoughts and books. I rarely take notes unless there is something I don't think I will remember. Typically I finish a book and the same day type my review on my blog before starting another book.
4. What do you love most about blogging?
Finding other books to read! I love checking out other blogs and seeing what everyone is reading. My wishlist has seriously gotten out of control. Sometimes I worry how I will ever read all of the books I want to haha.
5. What is your favorite movie or tv series?
Hmm I only keep up with a few TV series- Sons of Anarchy and Glee. I also very much enjoy Big Bang Theory. Eventually I'd like to watch all those episodes from the beginning, I just have to find the time.
6. What mythical creature do you like most?
I am going to have to say ghosts- in real life and in books (although I don't know how many ghosts books I have really read, not many). I am very interested in the paranormal world and go on tours whenever I can of places known to have active spirits. Spooky but fun!
7. When a book is made into a movie, what do you do first: read the book or watch the movie? And why?
ALWAYS read the book first. If I happen to watch the movie first (this only happens if I don't know there is a book) then I won't read the book because the movie tends to ruin it for me. Books are always better!
8. What's the next book you're going to buy?
Hmm this is hard to say. I get the Nook Daily Find and Nook Lover emails each day that feature ebooks under $5 so if there is something good I will get it. I have a few books on my Nook I'd like to read but then I may go for Fifty Shades of Grey because I need to see for myself what the hype is about.
9. How many books are in your TBR pile?
My TBR pile has grown in the past year. I can honestly say I never had one before because I only bought books as I read them. Now there are probably about 40, which is not terrible. My bookshelf is at home and since I am never there I hardly read books from that pile- I tend to just use my Nook. I am starting to get a TBR pile on my Nook also. My Wishlist is the one that is out of control though.
10. Do you spend much time on social media?
The only social media I am a part of is Facebook and it is a personal account- nothing to do with my blog. The reason I keep it is so my family and friends can keep track of where I am. I've considered deleting it and starting a travel blog but have not made that leap yet.
11. What's the book everyone should read? And why?
I think everyone should read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I love this book! The imagery makes you feel like you are a part of this magical circus. I wish it existed in real life so I could go!

Questions from Sophie
1. When is your favorite time to read?
I love reading anytime and mostly read at night but reading during the day, all day, is the best.
2. Coke or Pepsi?
Diet Coke but regular Pepsi. Weird, I know.
3. When do you feel most creative?
When someone plants the tiny seed of and idea in my head and I make something come of it. Example- for work someone wanted to make a little girl a card to send to her room. I turned it into a whole page drawing.
4. Do you read only book blogs?
Mostly, but there are a couple food blogs I follow also.
5. How long do you think you will keep blogging?
Hmm. I've never thought about this. I imagine I will keep it going as long as I can. Even if I start to get burnt out I would probably just stop doing memes but keep posting reviews. My blog is like my book diary. I need it to keep track of my books haha.
6. Do you tell your friends about your blog?
Yes, most of them know about it but they do not all follow it.
7. Do you cry when you read books?
Very rarely. Like once or twice.
8. Why do you think humans cry when they are sad? Think about it, why does water flows from your eyes when you are unhappy?
This is a very good question that I do not have the answer to haha. It is strange to think about things like that.
9. What is the first novel you read? Do you remember?
I don't remember. This will drive me crazy thinking about it
10. Why do you think you like reading so much, enough to dedicate a blog to it?
Reading is an escape into a new world of adventures. I love that. The blog is to keep track of all of that haha.
11. Do you have a favorite character?
Tough question. Recently it has been Jacqueline from Easy by Tammara Webber. She was such a great role model character for girls who read that book. I loved her strength and courage.

Ok that was a lot of questions about me, now it is my turn to ask some
My Questions
1. Where do you keep all of your unread books- together or scattered throughout your shelves?
2. Do your book selections vary by season?
3. What is your favorite food?
4. Do you read the inside flaps that describe a book before or while reading it?
5. Any quirky reading habits?
6. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? And why?
7. When did your love of reading begin?
8. What are the best and worst books you have read lately?
9. Do you have any hobbies outside of reading?
10. Which do you prefer- the beginning or end of a story?
11. What is your fondest book memory?

Teaser Tuesday Skip Day

I just realized it is Tuesday. Being in Hawaii (my favorite place in the world) has me at a complete loss of day and time. Since I arrived here and finished my last book, Easy by Tammara Webber, I have not started another book. I keep telling myself I need to start reading, but I have been taking my time to fully enjoy the island any moment I get. For this reason, I am going to skip my usual Teaser Tuesday post. I'll pick back up next week. Instead I will share a little picture teaser of the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii.

This is where I have been enjoying my evenings
with a few cold Kona Brew beers.

Mount TBR Challenge Checkpoint

AHH! We are half way through the year and I am so behind. Mount TBR Reading Challenge is hosted by My Reader's Block. You can still sign up here. Since my last checkpoint in March I have only read 3 more books from my TBR pile making that a grand total of 7 of 25 (eek!). I have a tendency to get a new book and want to read it immediately instead of shopping on my TBR pile and reading books from there- a habit I need to stop if I ever want to complete this challenge.

Now for a little fun with this checkpoint - choose one of the following (or more than one)...
-Write a poem with the titles from the books read for the challenge
-Who has been your favorite character and why?
-Have any of the books you read surprised you- if so, in what way (not as good as anticipated? unexpected ending? best thing you've read all year? etc.)

Since I am not feeling very creative I am going to skip the poem. Maybe another day I will come back and try it. I'm going to go with the last option- books that surprised me. Looking at the books I have read I am realizing how many of them were really good. I enjoyed all of these books very much, except one. Cheat and Charmer was a bit of a disappointment. It was very slow and pretty boring. I was expecting glamorous lives of people in the 1920's through the 1950's. What I got was a story about a family who just complained about everything. This is Where I Leave You was a great read! Very funny. It actually made me laugh out loud through most of the book. The Lotus Eaters, The Glimmer Palace, The Book Thief, and Bright Young Things were all great historical reads. I would recommend all of those books to people especially The Book Thief.

If you'd like to see my full challenge list click HERE

Might as well mention where I am at for my other challenges. I am doing a little better with the 2012 Ebook Challege 10 of 25 books read. And for the 2012 Wishlist Challenge I've got 5 of 12 books read. I really need to start focusing to get these challenges done! I need motivation to read the books on my shelf especially!!

How are your challenges going? Any recommendations on focusing to get them done?? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Feature & Follow Friday #21

Q: If you could unread a book, which one would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad?

A: Hmm I don't think I've read a book that was so terrible I want to unread it. But I wouldn't mind unreading Easy to read for the first time again. I just finished Easy by Tammara Webber (see my review HERE) and it has just stuck with me ever since I finished it. I almost just want to start it over again. I'm sure there are others I could unread to experience for the first time again but I can always just re-read them too :)

What book would you unread? Leave a comment to let me know!

Booking Through Thursday: Quotable

This week's Booking Through Thursday asks...

Do you have a favorite quote from a book?

A: As crazy as this sounds I don't think I do. I have come across great quotes but I never tend to write them down, so I quickly forget them. I really should start paying more attention to good quotes and keeping track of them.

What are your favorite book quotes? Leave me a comment, I'd love to hear them!

"Easy" by Tammara Webber

Easy
by Tammara Webber
548 pages

Short Version:

Why I Read It: I found this book on the Nook Daily Find. The summary sounded interesting so I decided to read it on my loooong plane ride.

The Book: (From Goodreads)
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email.

Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. At a downtown club, he disappears after several dances that leave her on fire. When he asks if he can sketch her, alone in her room, she agrees—hoping for more.

Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

My Thoughts: This was a great read on my 5 hour plane ride. From the summary, I assumed the book would start out when Jacqueline and her boyfriend were getting ready to go to college. It actually began after their breakup and even though I wasn't expecting this it was a good place for the book to begin.
I liked Jacqueline right away. I felt like I could easily relate to her. She knew when to set boundaries and how to stick with them. This is something every girl should learn and be confident about. Jacqueline gets into some situations that unfortunately happen in real life, not just in books. Her responses to these situations are great examples of what you should do if it were to happen to you. (I know I am being vague about this, but I don't want to spoil the book).
When Jacqueline meets Lucas he is the total opposite of a guy she would normally go for. But she thinks maybe this time she should go for it anyways. Lucas has hidden secrets about his past, but they have shaped who is. I really liked Lucas and totally have a crush on him! Lucas is the character that shows there is more than meets the eye.
Then there is Landon- the tutor Jacqueline only interacts with through email. He is more of her type; intelligent, funny, and a good guy. But they have only interacted through email. Jacqueline begins to have a crush on him too, until she finds out his secret.
I know this review is a bit vague and all over the place, but I do not want to give anything away. It was a great book that brought me back to my college days. It also brings up some serious situations that can happen in real life, and does a great job at showing the right thing to do.

"Hope's Daughter" by Melanie Cusick-Jones

Hope's Daughter
by Melanie Cusick-Jones
320 pages (e-book)

Short Version: Cassie and Balik begin to question life on the space station. When they go looking for answers, their world begins to unravel.

Why I Read It: I won this ebook in a giveaway. The summery intrigued me and I love the cover.

The Book: (From Goodreads)
Life should be simple for Cassie.

For the small population of Earth survivors who live on the Space Station Hope everything they do is planned and scheduled, down to the cyclical food menus, their roles in the station, even how many children they have.

Despite rigid controls directing her life, Cassie feels more out of synch than ever and worries she won’t find a place for herself within the station community. Perhaps that’s because she’s hearing things inside her head that can’t possibly be real. Or maybe it’s the regular elopements of her peers, heading off to a romantic future in the Married Quarter of the space station, whilst she’s never even been attracted to a boy – no matter how hard her best friend Ami pushes them at her. Then there are the odd questions her work placement partner Balik keeps raising. His questions are just as troubling for her as his distracting smiles and eyes that seem to see inside her.

As Cassie draws closer to Balik she finds that everything else in her life begins to shift. He tells her things that call into question the system they live within. She can't believe he is right, but at the same time she finds it hard to deny the sincerity of his ideas. Could there be a connection between Cassie’s problems and Balik’s questions? The truth will drag them both to a terrifying and deadly conclusion beyond anything they could have imagined.

My Thoughts: This book was amazing! Any time I picked it up to read, I was immediately pulled into the story and couldn't let go. One of the best things about it was how I was able to relate to the character's emotions and feel what they were feeling. I was happy, anxious, nervous, angry, just like Cassie and Balik. Speaking of Cassie and Balik, I loved them! In the beginning Cassie seemed a little quirky the way she had conversations with her conscious. Some of those conversations made me laugh out loud. Of course the voices she was hearing was not helping her out either. And then there is Balik- handsome, smart, caring Balik. I really enjoyed getting to know him with Cassie. He opened up to her and no one else. This helped build a great relationship between them. It wasn't too rushed or too slow. Balik likes to ask questions and challenge the station's ideas and systems. His curiosity is very appealing. And of course that is what gets the two of them mixed up in things they are not supposed to know. I don't think I am going to go into this much for fear of spoiling an amazing book you should all read. I will say the answers to their questions about life on the space station was not what I was expecting at all! I was surprised by each new event and I love that. It is so much more enjoyable if I cannot guess what is going to happen next. The ending to Hope's Daughter had enough closure to end the story but left some opening for a sequel. The next book in the series is Rainbow Maker's Tale and I cannot wait to get my hands on it to read!

5/5 Stars (You should all read this book!)

Feature & Follow Friday #20

I've missed a couple weeks of F&F Friday since I have just been crazy busy but I'm back this week! Here is today's question...

Q: Happy Father's Day! Who is your favorite dad character in a book and why?

A: I think I'm going to have to say Jack McCall from Beach Music (see my review here.) Jack drove me nuts sometimes when it came to dealing with his parents and siblings, but he was a wonderful father. Jack treated his daughter Leah, like she was an adult even though she was only 8. He respected her, was honest and talked to her about things they were going through. My own dad is similar, but not always as open as Jack McCall is.

Who is your favorite dad character? Is he like your own dad? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Booking Through Thursday: Do Over

This week's Booking Through Thursday asks...

Q: Have you ever bought a book, started reading it and then realized you have already read it? If so, how far did you get?

A: I don't think I have done this (yet). The past few years when I was busy with school I was not reading as much as I do now. The reason I started my blog was to keep track of the books I read. There are so many books I want to read, if I keep to my wishlist then I shouldn't run into this problem- hopefully :)

Have you ever purchased a book you already read? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Picture Post! (June 13)

This week has completely gotten away from me since I got onsite for my program. I'm in Aruba for 11 days, but I am so busy I have not had time to do or see anything- I am hoping this will change. This also means I have not had a chance to take a picture here yet. So this week's picture is an old one. I stayed with an island picture though, this one being from Kauai last year. By next Wednesday I will have a picture from Aruba to share!

"The Dovekeepers" by Alice Hoffman

The Dovekeepers
by Alice Hoffman
501 pages

Short Version: Four women tell their stories of being run out of Jerusalem and surviving in the desert.

Why I Read It: The title and cover of this book caught my attention awhile ago. When I found it in the bargain books at Barnes and Noble I jumped on it.

The Book: (From Goodreads)
In 70 CE, nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on a mountain in the Judean desert, Masada. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic historical event, Hoffman weaves a spellbinding tale of four extraordinary, bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her twin grandsons, rendered mute by their own witness. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and expert marksman, who finds passion with another soldier. Shirah is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power. The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege, as the Romans draw near. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love.

My Thoughts: This book was amazing! I was slow to begin it because I was so busy with work but as soon as I got home I was sitting for hours reading as much as I could until I finished.
The book was written in 4 parts, each part from a different point of view. I was not expecting this and after getting to part 2 was unsure of it. I continued reading and really like how it turned out. Each story was intertwined and continued where the other left off, but also told each woman's individual story. The epilogue in the end was well written and much needed. If it were to leave off after Part 4 there would be a lot of questions, but Hoffman handled the epilogue very well and I felt as if it came to a complete end. This is the second book I've read from this historical time period (the first being The Red Tent by Anita Diamont) and I cannot imagine what these women and their families really went through. They are all so courageous and strong. As I got to know them through their stories it just added to my admiration of them. The magic and witches drew me into the story even more. Hoffman did a very good job making this a part of their lives and not something make believe.

This book is amazing and I think everyone should read it!
5/5 Stars

**I apologize for this short, lacking review but I am running like crazy to get packed for my next trip and am a bit scatter-brained. I just wanted to get something of a review typed so I do not have to bring the hardback book with me. As I slow down and continue thinking about the book I may update my review later.

Booking Through Thursday: Secondary

This week's Booking Through Thursday asks...

Favorite secondary characters? (Note the plural)

First to come to mind is El Capitan and Helmud from Pure by Julianna Baggott. I expected El Capitan to be a brutal, mean officer like all the others but he turns out to have a good heart. I was so happy when I found this out and wanted to keep cheering for him. I also think Helmud knows more than he lets on. I am hoping to find out if this is true in the next book. Besides these two brothers I am at a loss trying to think of more characters.

Who are your favorite secondary characters? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Picture Post!

I just finished up in Chicago last night. Oh was it a tough one. I am very happy it is over. I did manage to get a couple pictures between all the craziness going on. So this week's Picture Post! is going to feature two pictures...

Ceiling of a cab I rode in. This made my day! The whole cab ride I was looking at all the buttons and decorations he had in there. Before I got out I left him a dollar bill from the Bahamas to put up if he wanted (I hope he does!)

This was my view out of my second hotel room. I had to change rooms after a few days because my first neighbor was causing problems.

July Travels

July's schedule is in and it totally made my day! I actually get some time home at the beginning of the month which is so amazing. My best friend will be visiting and I will get to attend a bachelorette party for a wedding I am in. After about 10 days at home I will be heading to...

Copper Point Resort in Canada

Beautiful mountain resort = perfect reading setting

Then I am off to Killarney
Another amazing reading setting, although I'll probably be busy soaking up the Irish culture on this one
If anyone has been to either of these places let me know what I should do there! I'm so excited for both.

Feature & Follow Friday #19

Q: You are a matchmaker- your goal, hook up two characters from your favorite books. Who would it be? How do you think it would go?

A: I am going to try to make sparks fly with Diane Bishop from A Discovery of Witches and Marco from The Night Circus. A witch who denies her magic and a magician who uses his surroundings to create magic. Could be an interesting couple. They could either get along very well or literally make sparks fly (not in a good way). I would have fingers crossed that they would work out and create some amazing magic together.

Who would you set up on a date? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Booking Through Thursday: DIY

Once again I forgot what day it is because work has been crazy, so this is a day late.

This week's Booking Through Thursday asks...

If you could write a book, what would it be about, and why?

Hmm I have never thought about this because I never considered myself much of a writer. But I think I would have to write a book about my experiences traveling. It would be funny and witty. I mean seriously, some of the things I do for work on a day to day basis are just ridiculous- like being a human sign for hours at a time. And just last night I witnessed a work function for another company going on in the hotel lobby. It was about 10pm and everyone was dancing to club music. I LOVE people watching so even though I needed to be going to sleep I stayed to watch, along with many other people. This group of people were having so much fun but I seriously could not believe some of the dance moves I saw (definitely not work appropriate). It's the small things like watching people dance, that make my day and I think all of it compiled into a book would probably be pretty funny.

What book would you write yourself? Leave me a comment and let me know!
